September 13, 2018 – United Way CSO hosted their annual workplace campaign kickoff breakfast at COAST Capri Hotel yesterday. The sold out event was fast-paced and fun with everyone donning team colours and jerseys for the “champions” theme.

Thanks to this year’s presenting sponsor, BDO Canada LLP, supporting sponsors, BMO, Gorman Bros. Lumber and Sun Life Financial and media partners, Bell Media’s EZ Rock, Global Okanagan, Capital News and Castanet.

Global Okanagan’s Doris Bregolisse was the honourary cheerleader and emcee of the event. The program included a traditional welcome from Westbank First Nation Elder, Wilfred Grouse and a beautiful performance by Krystal Lezard.

United Way Board Chair, Sinead Scanlon and Executive Director highlighted the significant needs in the community and the community investments of $1.42 million last year. United Way CSO announced a 3 year strategic plan and fundraising goal of $4 Million to support kids, youth, families, and seniors in our communities.

A special tribute to Maxine DeHart brought her to tears with local trio, Kitsch’n’Sync serenading her. This will be the last year for the Maxine DeHart Ramada Hotel Drive Thru on October 11 and she hopes to make it the best ever!

Impact speaker, Angie Lohr of H.O.P.E Outreach, gave a moving account of her personal story and how United Way helped turn her life around. The agency focuses on helping homeless and exploited women in the Kelowna and Vernon area. This was the first year the agency received funding from United Way.

The event wrapped up with the community partner bake sale contributing an incredible $2,225 towards the net proceeds thanks to the generosity of the crowd who took back some specialty baked items to the office.

United Way will be kicking off the campaign in the South Okanagan next Thursday, September 20th at the Penticton Lakeside Resort Drive Thru starting at 6:30 a.m. This weekend, Penticton Speedway hosts a United Way fundraiser with 50/50 proceeds going towards the Drive Thru.
